María Elsa Chaverria was taking the bus from Jinotega to Pradera de Pantasmas when the it hit an anti-tank mine. María survived but still has pieces of shrapnel in her chest, which exacerbate her asthma. Her asmtha has become so bad that María can no longer work. It is up to her husband, children and grandchildren to take care of her and provide for the family. María and her husband own a house and with a loan they could put a small pulperia (store that sells basic necessities) on their porch. Together María and her husband, who is also elderly, could run the store and María would be able to work since she wouldn’t have to walk too far or do any strenuous activity. With the store María could take some of the pressure off of her own children, who are worried about making enough for their children and there aging parents.
